Comprehensive Eye Care

A comprehensive eye exam performed by a Doctor of Optometry is an important part of preventative health care. It can be likened to a physical for the eye because it looks at the entire eye and visual system, as well as prescriptions. Comprehensive eye exams can detect eye diseases and disorders such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments and macular degeneration, as well as other systemic health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure. A comprehensive adult eye examination may include, but is not limited to the following tests (an individual patient’s presenting signs and symptoms, along with the professional judgment of the Optometrist, may significantly influence the testing done) DIAGNOSIS VISUAL ACUITY The visual acuity test is used to determine the smallest letters you can read on a standardized chart (Snellen chart) or a card held 6 metres away.. Some Snellen charts are actually video monitors showing letters or images. COLOR VISION A screening test that checks your color vision often is performed early in a comprehensive eye exam to rule out color blindness. In addition to detecting hereditary color vision deficiencies, color vision tests also can alert your eye doctor to possible eye health problems that may affect your color vision. CONTRAST SENSITIVITY The ability to distinguish objects from the background in which they are located. It is a critical component of functionally adequate vision SLIT LAMP EXAMINATION The slit lamp is an instrument consisting of a light source that can be focused to shine a thin sheet of light into the eye. It is used in conjunction with a biomicroscope. The lamp facilitates an examination of the anterior segment and posterior segment of the human eye, which includes the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, natural crystalline lens, and cornea. The binocular slit-lamp examination provides a stereoscopic magnified view of the ey...

Cataract & Refractive Surgery

Cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. When we look at something, light rays travel into our eye through the pupil and are focused through the lens onto the retina, a layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of the eye. The lens must be clear in order to focus light properly onto the retina. If the lens has become cloudy, this is called a cataract. CATARACT TREATMENT If your vision is only slightly blurry, a change in your eyeglass prescription may be all you need for a while. However, after changing your eyeglass prescription, if you are still not able to see well enough to do the things you like or need to do, you should consider cataract surgery. With cataract surgery, your eye's cloudy natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens implant (called an intraocular lens, or IOL). Your ophthalmologist will discuss the cataract surgery procedure, preparation for and recovery after surgery, the benefits and possible complications of cataract surgery, cataract surgery costs and other important information. Cataract surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight hospital stay. Cataract surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure and does not require an overnight hospital stay. DIAGNOSTIC FACILITIES The clinic utilises different types of ultrasound scan like A-scan (IOL Master) and B-scan and also uses the popular Auto refractometer. All the above help gauge the intensity of the cataract and find the accurate Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) required. Slit lamp Your ophthalmologist will closely examine the eye’s cornea (see How the Eye Sees video above), iris, lens and the space between the iris and cornea. With this special microscope, the doctor is able to examine your eye in small, detailed sections, making it easier to spot abnormalities. ...

Vitreo Retinal

Retinal Exam In order to examine the retina, first it is necessary to obtain a full medical and ocular history. Afterward, the patient's vision is checked using the eye chart. The pupils are examined. The eye pressure is taken, then the eye is dilated with short-acting, pupil-dilating eye drops. Dilation of the pupils is necessary for the doctor to examine the entire anatomy of the inner part of the eye. At this point, the patient is brought into the exam room and the physician begins his examination. The exam includes a complete ophthalmic assessment from the front of the eye to the back of the eye. The retinal exam includes a full inspection of the vitreous cavity and examination of the optic nerve, macula, retinal blood vessels and extreme peripheral retina. Once this is done, your doctor will make the decision whether or not to perform various retinal tests to further clarify the vitreous, macula, retina or choroidal diagnosis Vitreoretinal Vitreoretinal clinic is for the treatment of conditions at the back of the eye which require surgical intervention, especially retinal detachment. Vitreoretinal surgery refers to any operation to treat eye problems involving the retina, macula, and vitreous fluid. These include retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and complications related to diabetic retinopathy. DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES HEIDELBERG SPECTRAL DOMAIN OCT Optical Coherent Tomography (OCT) is a method used to image the retina and quantitatively track changes that occur. OCT analysis takes only seconds to perform and uses advanced optics and physics in order to measure retinal thickness, volume and area. Subtle retinal defects can easily be seen by your doctor. ANGIOGRAPHY - -FUNDEN FLUORESCEIN ANGIOGRAPHY Fluorescein Angiography (FA) Fluorescein angiography is a diagnostic test used to evaluate the retina and the retinal blood vessels with the help of a contrast dye (fluorescein). These pictures help the doctor evaluate the retina and diagnose and track problems such as diabeti...

Glaucoma Clinic

The glaucoma department at Chaithanya Eye Hospital and Research Institute is well equipped with the latest technologies to establish the clinical diagnosis of glaucoma . Our major doctors in Glaucoma Clinic are Dr. Meena Nair MS, FGO  and Dr.Thomas George MS, DO. Applanation Tonometry , Pachymetry, Humphrey Field Analyser11 etc are  the modern equipments available in this department. Gonioscopy and Aplanation Tonometry are done here regularly. Glaucoma "Glaucoma" is a term ascribed to a whole group of diseases affecting the eye that cause the pressure within the eye (the intraocular pressure) to be at unhealthy levels for the affected person. Because many different types of glaucoma exist, treatment depends upon the type of glaucoma as well as a variety of other factors. Average normal intraocular pressure in adults is 15 mm Hg. Symptoms: Symptoms that suggest the presence of chronic or acute glaucoma include: Trouble focusing vision. Poor night vision. Sensation of a blind area. Headaches associated with exercise. Headaches in the early morning or after dusk. Pain in the eye, particularly when associated with smoky vision. Halos around light. When symptoms of glaucoma occur acutely (that is, suddenly) and severely, it can be very painful and/or eyesight can worsen. If this happens, treatment needs to be started within hours. Early diagnosis is the key to corrective action. Facilities Equipments at the clinic The clinic has modern equipments like Humphrey Field Analyser II. Stereo bio microscopic evaluation optic nerve head- using +90D & +78D lenses. Digital photography equipment. Pachymetry . Optic nerve fibre analysis-Optical coherence tomography NCT Procedures The treatment of Glaucoma is through oral medication, eye drops or through laser treatment or surgery as the severity of Glaucoma might be. System medications are indicated as an emergency measure and they usually decrease the rate of generation of the liquid, aqueous humor, in the eye. Eye drops are used to assist the out...

Paediatric Ophthalmology

PAEDIATRIC VISION EVALUATION AND OPTICAL SERVICES   A comprehensive eye exam includes testing and evaluation of visual skills (function, performance, etc. In the absence of complete testing, common paediatric vision problems can go undetected, and, in some cases, can be misdiagnosed as a learning disability or behavioral problem. PAEDIATRIC SENSORY EVALUATION INCLUDING STEREOPSIS CHARTS AND SYNAPTOPHORE Synaptophore is ideal for the assessment and treatment of ocular motility disorders by reliably performing the most comprehensive binocular vision assessment available today. DIPLOPIA ASSESSMENT Diplopia chart is the record of separation of the diplopic or double images in the nine positions of gaze. It can be charted in patients who cooperate and can appreciate double vision and with incomitant or comitant deviation. ORTHOPTIC ASSESSMENT FOR STRABISMUS, CONVERGENCE AND ACCOMMODATION Orthotic evaluation is for the diagnosis and non-medical management of strabismus (eye turn), amblyopia (lazy eye) and eye movement disorders. HESS CHARTING It aids in the diagnosis of ocular motility defects. It measures the deviation and the amount of underaction and overaction of muscles. It is a repeatable and reliable record of the condition and is therefore a good way to show improvement or deterioration of the condition. PAEDIATRIC CATARACT EVALUATION AND BIOMETRY A cataract is any cloudiness or opacity of the lens of the eye, which is normally crystal clear.. Cataracts can result from genetic problems, infections, or they can occur spontaneously. Lens malformations that occur in conjunction with medical problems are often the result of a genetic or metabolic problem. These cataracts may be present at birth or may develop during childhood. ROP SCREENING Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vasoprolif...

Uvea Clinic

Treatment of uveitis Left untreated uveal inflammation can lead to blindness. Persistent uveitis can cause cataract, glaucoma, retinal oedema / swelling, retinal scarring, retinal detachment, optic nerve damage and, atrophy or shrinkage of the eye. Uveitis is managed by medicines and eye drops. Bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa or other agents along with abnormalities of the immune system can cause uveitis. Testing may involve blood tests, X-rays, special ocular studies or evaluation by other skilled medical consultants beyond ophthalmology. A full medical evaluation may reveal an inflammatory disease that has involved other organs besides the eye. Examples of this include sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis and related conditions. For these types of conditions, treatment for the underlying cause of the uveitis helps all parts of the body, including the eye. In most cases, no obvious underlying cause is found for the uveitis. Treatment then is directed to the eye inflammation alone. Treatment may include drops or injections of cortisone medication around the eye. Sometimes it may be necessary to use oral drugs that suppress inflammation, such as prednisone or cytotoxic (chemotherapeutic) agents. Treatment can be prolonged for uveitis. Therefore, close followup with an ophthalmologist is important to keep the eye functional and to detect occasional side effects from the treatments. ...

Orbit & Oculoplasty Clinic

This clinic is devoted to the ailments that pertain to orbit and those that need oculoplasty. Surgical treatment of diseases like ptosis, socket repair, ectropion, entropion etc are done here. Dr. Abraham Kurian, MS, DO is in charge of this clinic. Orbit The cavity in the skull that contains the eye is called the orbit formed from parts of frontal, sphenoid, zygomatic, lachrymal, ethmoid, palatine and maxillary bones. Oculoplasty Patients of all ages may need Oculoplasty, i.e. eyelid and facial reconstructive surgery for needs purely cosmetic or purely functional. The most advanced and innovative techniques of facial and eyelid surgery for such conditions as excess upper eyelid skin that obstructs vision (bleharoplasty), eyelid ptosis(droopy eyelids), entropion(eyelids that turn in), ectropion(eyelids that turn out), problems of the tear ducts, and thyroid eye disease. Blepharoplasty A short surgery done to remove excess upper eyelid skin hanging down over the eyelashes which may or may not interfere with vision. Ectropion It is a condition where the lower eyelid turns outward causing redness, irritation, watery eyes, infection, crusting, vision impairment, and damage to the cornea (surface of the eye). This is usually a result of facial aging, injury, tumour, or Bell’s Palsy. The surgeon corrects it by doing the needful to the supporting tissues and muscles around the eyelid. Entropion Here the eyelashes to rub against the eye as the eyelid turns inwards. Caused by laxity of the eyelid and/or spasm of the eyelid muscle, it may produce tear, infection, resulting vision impairment, and even damage to the cornea (surface of the eye). Repair of the supporting structures of the eyelid by an oculoplastic surgeon easily corrects the problem. Eyelid Ptosis It makes the upper eyelid droop, the cause of which may be injury to the muscle, congenital defect, muscle disorders, nerve disorders, or aging. It can obstruct vision when severe and create a tired or aged appearance. Children may require ear...
